Closing the Gap: Inference

DPTSA are involved in a project called ‘Closing the gap: test and learn scheme’ which is a two year project designed to test school and classroom interventions in large samples of schools. Interventions that make a positive difference in closing the attainment gap, and can be replicated, will then be spread across other schools. School-based research will be carried out during the academic years 2013-14 and 2014-15. Dilkes Academy has been chosen to test ‘Reading Inference’.

Closing the Gap – Inference Training

Closing The Gap is the biggest national research project that has taken place to date in Britain. It differs from previous projects because it is based on a Randomised Trial method. Working with Durham University, the DfE have funded over 740 schools to participate in testing five different interventions that are claimed to have a significant impact on pupil progress. Approximately half of the schools in the trial will use one of the interventions and half will not. All children in participating schools will be tested before and after the programme. If pupils in the schools that have used the interventions can be shown to have made more progress than those in the non-intervention schools, then it can proved that the intervention is effective.

DPTSA have agreed to participate in this research project. At Dilkes we have been selected to use the intervention ‘Inference Training’.This programme is designed for children in years 5 – 7. It focuses on teaching comprehension skills in a structured programme. We are using the programme with 12 pupils in Year 5 and have trained two teachers and three TAs to deliver and monitor the programme. We have already seen some positive impact on reading levels for the participating children, after a very few sessions. In addition, a condensed version of the training was delivered to all teaching staff and we will be developing this and using these ideas in our own Action-Research project. We will trial some of the methods from the programme in whole-class teaching and report back on their impact and usefulness in developing children’s comprehension skills. Finally we will create a ‘Best Methods Manual’of effective methods and activities for teaching children how to make sense of what they read; a life-long learning skill that will not only impact on their reading levels.
